sofa bed popularity surged in the 1950s as Americans moved to the suburbs and into ranch houses where there were guest rooms and recreation rooms in need of furniture. Though the guests who were unlucky enough to have to sleep on those behemoths, or the friends recruited to help move those monsters most likely did not appreciate how practical those sofa beds were.
